2ND LIEUTENANT James Anthony Horne is commemorated on both the Amersham and Chesham Bois War Memorials. He was just 23 when he died on July 1, 1916,110 years ago. This was the first day of the Battle of the Somme, a joint operation between British and French forces. Nearly 60,000 British casualties, of which 19,240 were killed, make it the bloodiest day in British military history.
